Regaining Strength & Independence

This case study highlights the recovery journey of a 64-year-old woman (“E”) referred for outpatient occupational therapy after brain tumor removal. The therapy was conducted by All Care Therapies in Texas.

The Challenge

Post-surgery, E struggled with attention, memory, and problem-solving, hindering her ability to manage daily activities like cooking, dressing, and home management. She also experienced pain, sleep disturbances, and reduced coordination.

The Solution

To support E’s recovery, therapy was designed around four key goals. First, fine motor coordination exercises were implemented to help her perform essential self-care and daily tasks more effectively. Safety and independence at home were addressed through training that targeted routine management skills. To reduce discomfort and enhance rest, E learned relaxation techniques aimed at easing pain and improving sleep quality. Finally, upper body strengthening and endurance-building activities were introduced to restore her ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) with confidence and stamina.

Approach:

  • Upper extremity strengthening and coordination

  • Energy conservation and mobility training

  • Relaxation techniques for pain and sleep improvement

  • A home exercise program for continuous progress

The program empowered E with the tools and confidence to restore functional independence.

The Results

E successfully regained full independence in her daily life. Her pain resolved, coordination improved, and she returned to managing tasks like dressing and cooking with ease. Clinically, she reached a Modified Barthel Score of 98/100, signifying near-complete independence and high recovery success.
