Occupational Therapy
Who is an Occupational Therapist?
An occupational therapist (OT) is a transformative healthcare professional who empowers people of all ages to lead fulfilling, independent lives and to engage in meaningful and purpose-filled activities. These activities can include essential daily activities such as eating, cooking, work, learning, play, self-care and home care, social-emotional, and leisure activities. Occupational Therapists work with individuals who may have physical, developmental, emotional, sensory, or cognitive disabilities that make it difficult for them to participate in everyday routines. By customizing therapeutic approaches and utilizing innovative tools and techniques, OT’s help people regain their independence, achieve their goals, improve their skills, adapt to their environments, & use assistive devices to enhance their quality of life.
How Does Telehealth-OT Work?
Telehealth-OT sessions are set up to provide the same services as a clinic visit. The only change is the location. The sessions are interactive and engaging and they occur in real time and in the environment where the person is most comfortable. Through online services, you can access the same high-quality care that you would get in a clinic with fewer hassles related to scheduling and travel time.
Do I need special equipment to have sessions?
Telehealth-OT takes place in the comfort of your home or a community area of your choice. The clinicians will work with material you have readily available in the home creating effective carryover and opportunities to embed therapy into all daily routines.
Should I wait until my child is older to start Occupational Therapy?
Telehealth-OT can start at birth if needed or immediately following an injury. The earlier OT is begun, the faster the changes occur. Occupational Therapy uses activities to promote brain development and create connections. Starting early builds foundational skills and sets individuals up for successful continued growth and development.
What development does Occupational Therapy support in early childhood?
The child’s brain development in the areas of cognitive, physical, and social growth occurs rapidly in the first few years of life. During these critical periods of development, the Occupational Therapist will work with a child on regulating their sensory and emotional systems, on helping them participate fully in daily activities like dressing, writing, hygiene, eating, and play.
What is the benefit of starting Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy is a core component of recovery after an illness, injury, or developmental delay. Occupational Therapists are skilled in providing the correct equipment, activities, and simulation required after an illness, injury, or neurodevelopmental deficit.

Physical therapy (PT) focuses on improving movement, strength, flexibility, and pain management to help individuals regain or enhance physical function.

What happens during a Physical Therapy session?
Sessions typically include exercises, stretching, manual therapy, posture training, and pain management techniques tailored to the individual’s needs.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for Physical Therapy?
It depends on your location and insurance plan. Some states allow direct access to PT without a referral, while others require one from a physician. If you are not going through insurance then no referral is needed.
Is Physical Therapy provided remotely or in-person?

Does Physical Therapy hurt?
Some discomfort may occur, especially when working on injuries or restricted movement, but PT should not cause severe pain. Your therapist will adjust treatments to your comfort level.
